IELTS Writing: Word Count Explained

When you take the IELTS writing test, you are probably well aware of the word count requirements, a minimum of 150 words in task one, and 250 words in task two.

According to the rules, how many words are there in this sentence.
“It’s believed that some one who has travelled abroad will be forty four times more likely to travel abroad again.”

In IELTS there are 20 words here.
1. Contractions
You should not be using contractions in IELTS, as it is not good academic style, and also it only counts as one word. If you changed it’s to it is, then you have an extra word, and you are getting closer to the required 150 or 250 words.

2. Separating Words
If you write a single word, as two words, then it will be counted as a single word (any one, no body, some body). Also you could lose marks for poor vocabulary. The example sentence should now be
It is believed that someone who has travelled abroad will be forty four times more likely to travel abroad again.”
Back down to 20 words.

3. Writing numbers as words
It is not a good idea to just write numbers as words 100 becoming one hundred to increase your word count. You can use both formats, but it will always be counted as one word.
The example could be
It is believed that someone who has travelled abroad will be 44 times more likely to travel abroad again.”
But it is still 20 words

One final thing to remember is the rules state a minimum of 150 words for Task 1 and 250 for Task 2. What is the maximum?
There is no maximum, but try not to write more than 180 for Task 1 and 280 for Task 2.
You can write more, but it does mean you have more chance to make more mistakes. You may also run out of time.
Writing too much shows bad planning, and it could affect your coherence, and gives you chance to go off-topic.
