IELTS Speaking: City Vocabulary

What is it like where you live?
Do you like living in the city?
Do you get many tourists visiting your area?
Describe an interesting town or city in your country that visitors might enjoy. You should say 

What the place is called
Where the place is
What the facilities are like
And say why visitors might enjoy going there.
What are the advantages of living in a city or big town?
In your experience are city centres usually attractive places?
What are some of the challenges facing towns and cities?


We all live somewhere, so these are questions everyone should be able to answer. They might come up in a speaking test, and you might be able to use some of these words or phrases in your answer.

Boarded up shops = Shops that are no longer open
“There are so many boarded up shops on my street, it does make me worry.”

Chain stores = Well-known brands with shops in multiple cities
“There are chain stores in every city, I miss going into family run stores.”

Close down = To stop doing business
“We had to close down our store, we were losing too much money.”

Fashionable boutiques = fashionable clothes shops
“I spend every Saturday looking around fashionable boutiques finding new stuff to wear.”


Get around= Travel around
“It is so easy to get around my city, we have great buses and a subway system to.”

High-rise flats/apartments= Multi-story buildings for people to live in
“I bought an apartment in a high rise, and I love it.”

The suburbs= The outer area of large towns and cities where people live
“Life in the suburbs can be quiet, but it is much more relaxing than the city centre.”

Lively bars/restaurants = bars or restaurants with a good atmosphere
“I spend most Friday nights in a lively bar with friends.”

Office block = A large building that contains offices
“I work in an office block, and live in a high rise. I spend way too much time waiting for elevators.”

Pavement cafe = Cafes with tables outside
“Is there anything better than a cup of coffee at a pavement cafĂ© watching the world go by.”

Places of interest / Tourist attraction = Buildings or places that have a particular interest for visitors
“We don’t have many places of interest in my town, so there are not many tourists.”

Public spaces = Areas in a town or city that are open to the public
“We have a few public spaces around the city, they are mostly squares and parks.”

Public transport system = public vehicles such as buses and subway trains that operate at regular times on fixed routes

Traffic congestion = When the traffic is heavy and it is hard to get around the city
“A good public transport system is the only thing that can relieve traffic congestion.”

Sprawling city = A city that has grown and covers a wide area.
“This is a sprawling city, which takes hours to get from one side to another
