IELTS: Writing Structure

When you are taking your IELTS exam, one of the most important things to do is use the correct structure.

Remember they know you only have 40 minutes, so they don't expect a perfect piece of work. You can get the structure right though, and that will go a long way with the examiner.

Generally you are going to be asked your opinion about something, discuss different points of view, the advantages and disadvantages, or the causes and solutions.

There is a structure you can learn for these essays. You should not memorize essays, but you should have an idea about the structure you can use.

A problem solution essay could look like this:

Introduction
Sentence 1: Paraphrase the Question
Sentence 2: Outline what you are going to say.

Body Paragraph 1
Sentence 3: State the problem
Sentence 4: Explain the problem
Sentence 5: Result of the problem
Sentence 6-7: Example

Body Paragraph 2
Sentence 8: State the solution
Sentence 9: Explain the solution
Sentence 10: Example

Conclusion
Sentence 11: Summarise
Sentence 12: Recommendation / Prediction

Remember a structure can guide your reader, and a good one will score highly.
