IELTS: Music Vocabulary

Music, we all listen to it. Well almost everyone does, it is also a topic that could come up in a speaking test.
Part One might include simple questions where you can talk about music
♪ “What kind of music do you listen to?”
♪ “Do you play any instruments?”
♪ “Have you got any hobbies or interests?”

In part two you could have topic card like this
Describe  a song you like to listen to.
 You should say

what  the piece of music is called
how  long you have liked it
when  you like to listen to it
and  say why you like it so much.


Then in part three, music could come up when you are faced with questions like.
“Is the Internet a good or bad thing for the music industry?”
“Should music be treated as seriously as subjects like maths or sciences at school?”
“Where do people usually enjoy listening to music?”

Some of the key vocabulary you might want to use when answering any of these questions include:
Adoring fans = people who love a specific band or singer

Background music = The music that you hear when something else is happening. This is very common in movies.

A catchy tune = A song that is so easy to remember, and you want to sing it.

Classical music = This music is regarded as part of a long and formal tradition. These include folk and jazz too.

To download tracks = When you get music from the Internet (tracks is another word for songs.)

To have a great voice = A good singer has a great voice.

To go on tour = When bands or singers go around a region or country playing different shows.

A huge following = A lot of fans

Live music / performance = When you listen to music in person.

A massive hit = A song that sell a lot of copies, and is very popular.

A music festival = When a place has a lot of performances over a few days.

Musical talent = When you have a skill in music.

A piece of music = An item of music


A pop group = A small group of people who play and sing pop music.

To read music = When you can understand and follow musical notes.

A rock band = Musicians who play rock music.

A slow number = A song that has a slow tempo.


Taste in music = The music that someone likes.

To be / sing out of tune = When you sing the wrong notes

Tone deaf = When you can’t distinguish different musical notes.
