IELTS: City Vocabulary

Cities are big and half the world lives in one. Today we are going to have a look at the words we can use to describe the environment, buildings and locations we live in
IELTS Vocabulary

Cosmopolitan (environment)
When the city has an exciting and glamorous character, because of the many different cultures living there.


Metropolitan (city)
A very large and busy city.

Downtown/ City Centre
The central part or main business /commercial area of a town or city.

Urban (adj)
Anything that relates to the characteristics of a town or city.

The suburbs (noun) / Suburban (adj) areas
A district in the outlying area of a city, and usually a residential one.

Rural (adj)
Relating to the characteristics of the countryside

The Outskirts (noun)
The outer parts of a town or city

CBD (Central Business District)
The commercial and business centre of a city.

City hall
The buildings where the city government is.

Inland city
A city far away from the ocean.

Mountainous city
A city on and around mountains, like Chongqing.

Coastal city
A city near the ocean.

Industrial estate
An area of land developed for factories and other businesses.


Housing estate
A residential area where the houses were all built at the same time.

High rise
A building which is 35-100 metres tall or 12-39 floors.


Skyscraper
A very tall building,exactly how tall is not clear, but generally it should be at least 100 metres tall.
