Arduous
Word Family: Adjective
Pronunciation: (ˈɑːdjʊəs)
Stress: AR-du-ous
Meaning:When something involves or requires a lot of effort. It is very difficult and tiring.
Example: “Marco Polo made such an arduous journey incoming to China so many years ago.”


Arid
Word Family: Adjective
Pronunciation:(arɪd)
Stress: A-rid
Meaning:
1) When the land or climate, has no rain, and it is too dry to grow anything.
Example: “Most of Australia is too arid to support life.”
2) When something or someone lacks in interest, excitement or meaning.
“My arid years after university are not worth talking about.”

Bustle
Word Family: Verb
Pronunciation: (bʌs(ə)l)
Stress: BUS-tle
Meaning:
1) [With no object, with adverbial of direction], to move in abusy and energetic way.
Example: “People bustled about. ”
2) [With an object and an adverbial of direction], to cause someone to move quickly in a particular direction.
They bustled me into the classroom as soon as I arrived.”
3) [With no object], for a place to be full of activity.
“The streets bustled with people.”
NOTE: As an adjective it is ‘bustling’“Beijing is a bustling city.”

Cherish
Word Family: Verb [With obj]
Pronunciation: (tʃɛrɪʃ)
Stress: CHER-ish
Meaning:
1) When you lovingly care for and protect someone.
Example: “I have found a woman I can cherish.”
2) When you hold something dear.
cherish the necklace my boyfriend gave me.”
3)When you keep a hope or ambition in your mind.
“I have cherished my dream of being an astronaut for a long time.”

Costly

Stress: COST-ly
Meaning:
1) Something is very expensive.
Example: “Buying an apartment is very costly.”
2) Causing suffering, loss or disadvantage.
Example: “It was a costly mistake.”



Desolate

Stress: DE-so-late
Meaning:
1) A place, which is empty.
Example: “Guangzhou and other big cities are desolate during Chinese New Year.”
2) When you feel very lonely or unhappy.
Example: “He is desolate since his wife left him.”

Meaning:
1) Very depressed and in low spirits, because you have lost hope or courage.
Example: “With every test failure I get more and more despondent.”




Disparate
Word Family: Adjective
Pronunciation: (dɪsp(ə)rət)
Stress: DIS-pa-rate
Meaning:
1) When something is so different, that it cannot be compared.
Example: “I think we have disparate ideas, we are never going to agree.”
2) When the elements inside something are very different from one another.
Example: “America is being a disparate country.”
