Essay Writing Guide

Are you studying at university?
Are you preparing to take IELTS?
Are you preparing to take TOEFL?
Are you preparing to take SAT?
Are you preparing to take ACT?
Are you ready to do any formal writing?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then you need to think about your writing, as you will probably be writing analytical essays.

What is an analytical essay?
1. It is a structured piece of work.
2. It proves your thesis
3. It analyses a topic
4. It uses evidence
5. It is persuasive
6. It does this through language, evidence and the format.
7. It is formal - which means no slang, and uses sophisticated language

What is a thesis?
This is your argument and you should be able to put it into a sentence.

How is it structured?
It depends on the word count, but for 250-300 word essays, you want about 4 paragraphs including the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.

Each of the body paragraphs requires specific information.
Try to remember TEES
T = Topic Sentence
E = Explain
E = Evidence
S = Sum it up

Essay planning
1. Read the question, and decide what you have to do.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the question? What examples can you use?
3. You have your thesis (your opinion) Brainstorm ideas to show why you have that opinion.
4. Take these ideas, and choose the best ones, these will become the topic sentences for the body of your essay.
5. If this is an assignment, research to find evidence that supports your points.
6. If you are in exam, think of logical reasons to support your points.
