Today we are briefly looking at how to create effective sentences.
There are four types of sentence:
1) A simple sentence, which has one main clause.
2) A compound sentence, which has two main clauses.
3) A complex sentence, which has one main clause and one subordinate clause.
4) A compound-complex sentence, which has two main clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Remember:
If you have two ideas of equal importance = use two simple sentences or one compound sentence.
If one idea is less important put it in a dependent clause to form a complex sentence.
Vary your sentence length to show your writing skills
Long sentences are for grouping or combing ideas, listing points, and summarizing or previewing information.
Medium-length sentences are for showing the relationship between ideas.
Short sentences are to emphasize important information.
Select Active or Passive Voice
Active voice = subject, verb, object
“A thief stole my wallet.”
Subject Verb Object
Passive voice = The object receives the action, and maybe we do not say by who
“My wallet has been stolen (by a thief).”
Subject Verb Object
Emphasize Key Thoughts by
Amplifying them through description
Putting them at the beginning or at the end of the sentence
